If there were ever a time in which the gifts of the Spirit had ceased it would not be because they were unavailable to the church but because the church had become unavailable to them.
This is not to say that the gifts are not messy and frequently abused. They are, but the answer to false gifts can never be “no gifts”. Just as the answer to bad theology can never be no theology. (See 1 Corinthians 12-14)
Look at what the body does when it gets sick. It raises its temperature to kill the infection (a fever). And this is precisely what the church of God must do to rid ourselves of the abuses. We do not need to out right deny the gifts to control their misuse, we need only to raise our temperature a few degrees. The fire is as much for our purification as it is for our inspiration.
